Beyonce and Blue Ivy Carter
Along with Kim Kardashian, another celebrity whose child has become more prominent in their media presence is Beyonce with her 11-year old daughter Blue Ivy Carter, whom Beyonce had with rapper Jay Z. Blue Ivy took more of an interest in music and had a part in a song with her mother. In 2020, Blue Ivy was featured on a single by her mother titled “Brown Skin Girl” alongside Wizkid and Saint Jhn, a song that later was awarded a Grammy. Last year, Carter joined the Renaissance World Tour as a dancer to dance to “My Power” and “Black Parade” with her mother, causing her to go viral online. Blue Ivy was rarely in the public eye prior to performing on this tour, as she only was seen attending awards ceremonies with her parents. Initially when it came to Blue Ivy performing on the tour, Beyonce was hesitant about it, even telling her no when she told Beyonce she was ready to perform (Moore). However, she decided to let her perform anyways as she proved herself to be determined and work hard.
When it came to this tour however, Blue Ivy received a lot of negative comments from people online. This first started when she made her first appearance during a performance in Paris in May. According to the article, “Cruel trolls targeted the preteens as they claimed that she couldn’t dance and wasn’t following in Beyonce’s footsteps” (Soteriou). These kinds of comments persisted throughout the remainder of Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour, but she did receive tons of support from fans as well. Beyonce tried to keep Blue Ivy away from social media for this reason as she did not want her daughter impacted from the hate she received online, but she somehow got access to see the comments. Despite the negativity and criticism online, Blue Ivy maintained an incredible work ethic and even used the feedback as fuel to work even harder in her performances. She reflects on this saying, “I mean, there were lots of negative things that people had to say, but I could see that the more I do, the better I become” (Soteriou). Many fans had also commented online in Blue’s defense indicating how it is disgusting and mean to target a child online.
